A dramatic security scare unfolded in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night after a gunman stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton and opened fire during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and members of the President’s Cabinet were swiftly evacuated as chaos erupted inside the venue.
According to officials, shots were fired in the lobby area of the hotel, triggering an immediate and coordinated response from Secret Service agents and law enforcement on site.
Guests at the high-profile event were left shaken as security teams moved quickly to secure the area and escort key figures to safety.
The suspect has been identified as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California.
He was apprehended by authorities following the incident.
Shortly after being secured, President Trump addressed the nation from the White House press briefing room, where he also released footage of the alleged gunman inside the hotel lobby moments before the shooting.
In a statement following the incident, Trump praised the rapid response of law enforcement.
“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” he said.
He confirmed the suspect had been taken into custody and indicated that officials were considering whether the event would continue despite the disruption.
“I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,” Trump added. “They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.”
Authorities have not yet released further details on injuries or a possible motive.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one of the most high-profile annual gatherings in Washington, typically brings together political leaders, journalists, and celebrities for an evening of speeches and satire.
Saturday night’s event, however, was overshadowed by the sudden outbreak of violence, turning what is usually a lighthearted occasion into a tense and rapidly unfolding security crisis.
