In a shocking double tragedy that has sent waves of fear through sunseekers on Brazil's northeastern coast, two horrific shark attacks have devastated families in the space of just 24 hours on popular beaches near Recife.

The latest victim is brave Marcela Vitória de Lima Santos, a 19-year-old law student from São Lourenço da Mata, who was enjoying a day out with her cousin and friends at the bustling Boa Viagem beach in Recife when disaster struck around 3:10pm on Monday.

Witnesses say Marcela was wading in shallow, waist-deep water, a spot where swimmers often feel safe, when a massive tiger shark suddenly struck, savagely tearing off her right leg in a frenzied attack. Her cousin, 32-year-old security guard Jonas André de Lima, who pulled her from the blood-reddened sea, revealed the young woman was already missing her limb by the time she reached the shore.

Graphic video footage from the scene, which has gone viral, shows desperate beachgoers and lifeguards rushing to help the stricken student as she lay on the sand. A doctor who was on the beach at the time described the horrifying moment: the water around her turned crimson, and when rescuers dragged her onto the beach, it became clear her right leg had been completely severed at the thigh.

Marcela was rushed first to a local hospital and then transferred to Hospital da Restauração in Recife, where surgeons fought to stabilise her. She underwent emergency surgery to control the bleeding and remains in a serious condition in intensive care. Her devastated parents rushed to her bedside as she battles for life.

Tragically, this nightmare unfolded just one day after an even younger victim suffered a similar fate. On Sunday afternoon at Piedade beach in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, just a short distance away, an 11-year-old boy named João Lucas was mauled by a 2.5-metre bull shark (locally known as 'cabeça-chata') while swimming with family.

The youngster suffered devastating injuries to his left leg and hand. Despite heroic efforts by rescuers, his left leg had to be amputated. He too, was taken to Hospital da Restauração, where he remains in a grave but stable condition in the paediatric ICU. His grandfather, speaking to local media, described the family's anguish as the boy pleaded with rescuers not to let him die.

These back-to-back attacks have once again thrust Recife's beaches into the global spotlight as one of the world's most dangerous stretches of coastline for shark encounters. Since records began in 1992, Pernambuco state has seen at least 83 shark incidents, many of them fatal, with Boa Viagem and Piedade among the worst-hit spots.

Experts point to the construction of the nearby Suape port decades ago, which altered currents and brought sharks closer to shore in search of food, as a key factor. Warning signs are plastered along the beaches, yet many locals and tourists continue to venture into the inviting turquoise waters.
