HOUSTON – Authorities in Harris County are searching for a woman described as a "crypt crook" who was captured on surveillance video breaking into cremation niches at a West Houston mausoleum, stealing jewelry and memorial items from the deceased, all while dragging a young toddler along with her.
The disturbing incident took place at a cemetery along the 13000 block of the Katy Freeway, according to the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office. Surveillance footage shows the heavyset suspect, identified as a white female between 30 and 45 years old, carefully examining multiple glass-front niches before using a tool to pry open a protective panel and rummage through the contents.
She allegedly made off with jewelry and other valuables left behind by grieving families as tributes to their loved ones. Investigators say this was not her first time targeting the location.
Harris County Precinct 5 Constable Terry Allbritton condemned the act as despicable, noting it preys on families already mourning their losses. “This is not just theft, it’s a violation of the sanctity of final resting places,” officials have emphasized in appeals for the public’s help.
The suspect is described as having dark hair, wearing glasses, and displaying several tattoos on her back. Authorities believe she may be a repeat offender at the site.
Cemetery thefts remain relatively uncommon, but when they occur, they strike a particularly raw nerve in communities. Similar cases in other parts of the country have involved organized rings targeting urns, jewelry, and keepsakes from columbaria.
Anyone who recognizes the woman or has information about the thefts is urged to contact Deputy Tgre Fields at Tgre.Fields@cn5.hctx.net or submit an anonymous tip through the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office online crime tips portal.
