A heart-pounding video capturing a woman and her service dog being pursued by a young grizzly bear has gone viral, leaving viewers shaken and offering a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in Canada’s bear country.

The shocking footage shows the tense encounter unfolding on a gravel road surrounded by dense forest and mountains in Kananaskis, Alberta. The woman, filming from a first-person perspective while walking her black dog on a blue leash, spots the bear approaching.

As the grizzly closes in, the animal rears up on its hind legs at one point, appearing to assess the situation. The woman can be heard urgently yelling commands like “Stop it! Go away!” and similar pleas as she and her dog begin retreating. The bear continues following them closely along the road before the pair manages to create distance and escape without injury.

Kananaskis Country, a popular recreation area west of Calgary known for hiking and outdoor activities, is prime grizzly bear habitat. Alberta wildlife officials regularly issue warnings about bear activity in the region, especially during warmer months when animals are more active foraging.

Experts stress that bear bells are often ineffective, and can sometimes attract curious bears, while carrying and knowing how to use bear spray is strongly recommended in such areas. Making noise with your voice, staying alert on trails and roads, and knowing how to respond (back away slowly, appear larger, never run) can make the difference between a scare and a tragedy.

Thankfully, in this case, the young grizzly appeared more curious than aggressive. No one was hurt, and the incident serves as a powerful public service announcement for anyone venturing into bear territory.
