A brutal attack caught on camera is shedding new light on Ecuador’s ongoing gang violence after gunmen posing as police officers stormed a neighborhood soccer field and killed three men.
The incident happened earlier this month inside a gated community near the port city of Guayaquil. Security footage shows several attackers dressed in what appeared to be law enforcement uniforms walking onto a soccer pitch where a group of men were playing. Without warning, the gunmen opened fire, sending players scrambling for cover and forcing others to the ground.
One victim was left lying motionless in the middle of the field as the shooters fled. Two additional bodies were later discovered in areas surrounding the sports complex, according to local reports cited by Newsflash.
Investigators say the attackers didn’t just arrive armed. Before the shooting, they reportedly overpowered the community’s security guards, beat them, tied them up, and stole their weapons, according to Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo.
Authorities have identified one of the victims as 40-year-old Stalin Rolando Olivero Vargas, known by the alias “Marino.” Interior Minister John Reimberg said Olivero Vargas was the leader of Los Lagartos, a local criminal organization, and is believed to have been the primary target of the attack, possibly as part of a feud with a rival gang.
The other two men killed were identified as Jefferson Xavier Salon Olivero, 33, and Richard Josue Mina Vergara, 29. Officials say both had lengthy criminal histories that included charges related to drug trafficking, murder, and robbery.
The attack highlights how criminal groups in Ecuador have increasingly adopted military style tactics and disguises to carry out executions, even in public spaces meant for recreation. Authorities continue to investigate the suspects involved as violence linked to organized crime continues to escalate across the country.
