An undercover investigation has raised fresh concerns about election integrity after a New York City elections worker was secretly recorded, allegedly admitting that non-citizens are able to register to vote without being reported to authorities.
In a video released online, an individual posing as a non-citizen claims to have visited the New York City Board of Elections to test whether safeguards were in place to prevent illegal voter registration. According to the footage, the elections worker acknowledged that non-citizens occasionally attempt to register and suggested such applications are not flagged or reported.
“Once in a while… we have people come in here… and they register, they weren’t a citizen,” the worker can be heard saying on the recording.
When asked whether that information is reported, the worker allegedly responded, “That’s not my job to report anyone,” adding that the office “accept[s] anything that comes over the counter.”
The undercover activist behind the video claims the worker also indicated he would submit the application despite knowing the applicant was not legally eligible to vote.
Federal law prohibits non-citizens from voting in U.S. federal elections, and falsely claiming citizenship on a voter registration form is a crime. Critics argue the footage suggests that enforcement of those laws may depend more on trust than verification, particularly in large urban jurisdictions.
Election integrity advocates say the video raises serious questions about how many ineligible voters may already be on voter rolls nationwide and whether similar practices exist in other cities. They argue that even isolated incidents can undermine public confidence in elections.
