ESCONDIDO, Calif. – A 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran known throughout his California community for proudly displaying American flags and pro-Trump banners at his home has died from injuries sustained in a savage, unprovoked beating last week, authorities and family members confirmed.

Kerry Sheron succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night after being attacked on May 20 outside his residence on East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, which locals affectionately called the "Trump House" for its extensive collection of Trump and U.S. flags. Sheron's wife, Maria Garcia, told reporters her husband was left in critical condition and never recovered.

According to prosecutors, 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler allegedly punched Sheron in the jaw, knocking him to the ground before repeatedly kicking him in the head. A utility worker intervened to restrain the suspect until police arrived. Butler, who also served in the Navy and lives nearby, was arrested blocks away and booked on charges including attempted murder, elder abuse, and battery. He pleaded not guilty in court and is being held without bail as homicide charges are now expected.

Sheron's wife has been vocal about what she believes motivated the attack. In emotional statements, she described prior threats against the couple over their patriotic displays."He tried to kill my husband," she said. "It's terrible. I don't know what kind of hate... what heart, the black heart. They don't like the flags. I support America. My husband is a veteran."

While Escondido police have not officially confirmed a political motive, the incident has fueled outrage among conservatives who see it as another tragic example of escalating political violence and intolerance toward Trump supporters in deep-blue California.

On Memorial Day, dozens of neighbors and supporters gathered outside the Trump House with flags and flowers to honor Sheron, remembering him as a dedicated patriot who served his country and exercised his First Amendment rights by flying banners celebrating America and its leaders.

The case comes amid broader national concerns about rising political tensions and violence. Critics have pointed to inflammatory rhetoric from the left as contributing to a toxic climate where everyday conservatives, especially outspoken veterans, can become targets simply for showing their support.
