Viral Video Shows Nature Recreating 'Life of Pi' as Pelican and Seal Board Tourist Boat in Namibia

A stunning video sweeping across social media is leaving viewers in awe — and drawing direct comparisons to the Hollywood blockbuster The Life of Pi.

Filmed during a routine tourist cruise in Walvis Bay, Namibia, the clip captures a large white pelican casually landing on the boat and making itself at home right beside passengers. Moments later, a Cape fur seal swims up, hauls itself aboard, and settles down comfortably on the deck as if it owns the place.

The footage, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views since circulating on X and other platforms, shows the pelican spreading its massive wings and standing inches from a wrapped-up passenger sipping from a mug. The seal then climbs the side of the moving vessel before lounging on the floor, completely unfazed by the humans on board. This isn’t just another cute animal video, it’s nature staging its own real-life version of The Life of Pi.

In the 2012 Oscar-winning film directed by Ang Lee, young Pi Patel survives a shipwreck by sharing a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The story explores survival, coexistence, and the thin line between man and beast in the middle of the ocean.

Here in Namibia, the cast is different, a bold pelican and a determined seal instead of a ferocious tiger, but the theme is strikingly similar: unexpected animal companions turning an ordinary boat ride into something extraordinary.

Locals and frequent visitors to Walvis Bay say these kinds of close encounters aren’t entirely rare. The area is home to massive colonies of Cape fur seals and large populations of great white pelicans drawn by the rich marine ecosystem along Africa’s southwest coast. Tourist boats often become temporary resting spots or opportunistic feeding grounds for the wildlife.

Still, watching a seal climb aboard and a pelican perch like a crew member is enough to make anyone do a double-take.

Social media users have flooded the comments with reactions ranging from “Noah’s Ark vibes” to direct Life of Pi references. One viewer joked the boat should be renamed after the famous story, while others marveled at how relaxed both animals appeared.
