NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Disturbing new footage shows a white female police officer being viciously assaulted on the ground by a group of Black teenagers during a chaotic "teen takeover" event in North Charleston, South Carolina.
The video, which began circulating widely on Sunday morning, captures the officer, identified in the footage by her blonde ponytail and dark uniform, on the grass near train tracks as multiple young males kick, punch, and swarm her. At one point, one attacker appears to deploy a Roman candle firework, shooting sparks directly into the fray as the assault continues.
Bystanders, many of them teens themselves, stand nearby filming the attack on their phones instead of intervening. A young female in the crowd is also seen holding a long stick or bat. Other officers eventually arrive on scene amid flashing police lights and a large crowd of onlookers. At least one male officer is shown engaging with suspects on the ground as the situation remains tense.
The graphic footage has been described by those sharing it as "horrifying" and "hard to watch."
"Teen takeovers", large, often illegal gatherings where groups of young people converge on streets or open areas, have increasingly led to disorder, vehicle stunts, property damage, and violence in cities across the country. This incident underscores the dangers law enforcement faces when responding to such events.
The video shows the female officer on the ground and outnumbered as the mob continues its assault. Reinforcements appear to help subdue several of the attackers.
No official statement has been released yet by the North Charleston Police Department regarding arrests, injuries, or the exact circumstances leading up to the confrontation. The footage is being widely shared online with calls for the involved teens to face adult charges and for parents to be held accountable.
This comes as communities grapple with rising concerns over juvenile crime and the challenges of policing large, unruly youth gatherings.
