The federal government’s decision to withhold $260 million in Medicaid funding from Minnesota is raising explosive questions about what critics say may be a deeply broken system ripe for abuse.
At the center of the controversy are so-called “autism centers”, which skeptics allege have been diagnosing children with autism at staggering rates in order to unlock massive Medicaid reimbursements.
According to figures now circulating online, Medicaid payments tied to autism-related services in Minnesota allegedly skyrocketed by an eye-watering 18,900 percent between 2017 and 2024. Critics argue that such a surge cannot be explained by population growth or improved awareness alone.
Instead, they claim it points to a perverse financial incentive structure, where diagnoses translate directly into taxpayer-funded payouts.
Under Medicaid rules, autism services can generate millions of dollars for providers through long-term therapy programs, evaluations, and ongoing treatment plans. Watchdogs warn that without strict oversight, the system may reward overdiagnosis, rather than genuine care.
“This is how the racket works,” critics argue. “Label the child, bill the state, and keep the checks coming.”
State and federal officials have not publicly accused specific providers of wrongdoing, and no criminal convictions have been announced. However, the decision to freeze hundreds of millions in funding suggests authorities believe serious compliance failures or irregularities may be at play.
