A breathtaking 17th-century painting depicting a dramatic battle with a dragon has been uncovered after lying hidden for more than 380 years behind another artwork in an Italian church.
The remarkable discovery was made during restoration work in 2022 at the historic Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, where experts stumbled upon a long-lost fresco concealed beneath a later canvas.
The newly revealed masterpiece, created around 1645 by Baroque artist Aniello Falcone, shows the legendary figure of St. George locked in a fierce battle with a dragon, brought to life in vivid colors that have astonishingly stood the test of time.
Despite being hidden for centuries, the artwork remains strikingly well-preserved, with its dramatic composition and intense movement still clearly visible.
The fresco had been completely concealed behind another painting for generations, leaving its existence unknown until restoration efforts uncovered the secret beneath.
In an ingenious twist, visitors can now experience both works thanks to a specially designed pulley system that allows the outer painting to swing open like a door, revealing the hidden scene behind it.
Video footage of the reveal shows the moment the front canvas is moved aside, exposing the vibrant dragon-slaying scene and drawing gasps from those witnessing the extraordinary find.
Experts say the discovery offers a rare glimpse into the layered history of the church, where artworks were sometimes replaced or covered over time, either for stylistic updates or preservation.
Now brought back into the light after nearly four centuries, the dramatic fresco is captivating a new generation, proving that even in well-studied historic sites, astonishing secrets can still be hiding in plain sight.
