A gold miner has been pulled from deep underground in a stunning survival story after spending nearly two weeks trapped in darkness following a catastrophic collapse.
Francisco Zapata Nájera, 42, was discovered alive around 300 meters below the surface after an embankment gave way inside a gold mine, leaving him stranded in near-impossible conditions.
Dramatic rescue footage from Mexico shows the exhausted miner standing in waist-deep water as crews finally reached him, ending a desperate search that had gripped rescuers for days.
Despite the ordeal, Zapata Nájera told those who found him that he never lost hope.
The nightmare began on March 25 when a tailings dam, used to store mining waste, suddenly burst, sending debris and water crashing through the mine and trapping workers deep below ground.
Of the 25 miners inside at the time, 21 managed to escape in the immediate aftermath.
Four, however, were left behind.
In the days that followed, rescuers worked around the clock to reach those still trapped. Another miner, José Alejandro Cástulo, was pulled out alive after spending five days underground.
Tragically, one worker was later confirmed dead.
Search teams are still working to locate a fourth miner who remains missing, as hopes fade but efforts continue.
Zapata Nájera’s survival, however, has been described as nothing short of extraordinary.
Spending nearly two weeks in darkness, surrounded by rising water and cut off from the outside world, the 42-year-old endured conditions that many would not survive.
His rescue has brought a rare moment of relief in an otherwise devastating incident, highlighting both the dangers of mining operations and the resilience of those who work deep beneath the earth.
