A California family is demanding answers after one of their dogs was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy who allegedly entered the backyard of their vacant home during an investigation into a stolen car nearby.
Disturbing security footage from San Bernardino County reportedly shows the moment the encounter turned deadly.
Jesus Serna and his family said they are currently not living at the property because the home is under construction, though they occasionally bring their dogs there while checking on the residence.
According to the family, deputies with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department were investigating a stolen vehicle in the neighborhood when one officer approached the vacant house.
The family claims the deputy knocked at the door before allegedly letting himself into the backyard through a gate.
Video footage reportedly shows one of the family’s dogs, Raven, wagging her tail as the officer entered the yard.
Moments later, the family’s other dog, Daisy, began barking at the deputy.
The officer then opened fire, killing Daisy.
The shocking footage has sparked outrage online, with many viewers questioning why lethal force was used during the encounter.
Serna said the devastating incident became even more traumatic after authorities took Raven to a shelter following the shooting.
He later had to retrieve the surviving dog himself and reportedly paid $250 in fees to get her released.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the incident and the discharge of the deputy’s firearm are now under investigation.
Authorities have not yet publicly stated whether the deputy believed he was in danger at the time of the shooting.
The family says they are heartbroken over the loss of Daisy and want accountability for what happened inside their backyard.
The case has reignited debate surrounding police encounters involving family pets, with critics arguing that officers too often resort to deadly force during routine calls and property checks.
No additional information about the deputy involved has yet been released.
